vocational rehabilitation | Autism PDD

Hi we finnally have the results from the Vocational testing and I was very surprized how in depth it was. They watch and observed Robert's behavior and mostly his scores were in the always range (95% range), there were scores in the sometimes range( 70-40%)and some in frequenly range (94%-70%). As for carer choices of course he couldn't work on an assembly line but anything technology or math. As for his grooming that is still area he needs to work on. His counselor asked Robert what does he want to do now. So, he decided to take their computer accounting course. It's a 35 week course and he'll live in a dorm there at vocational rehab site. He'll come home on weekends. The course is self-pased and once he finishes he has an intership there. Once that is completed he'll get another intership with a state of Maryland program (quest) for the disabled. Hopefully this will lead to a full time job for him. The great thing about this opporunity is that is all FREE!!!

All the counselor could tell us that are 5 openings in Feburary and 5 openings in March. That's all we know how they decide who gets in and when we don't know. So, Robert waits and at least there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. It has been a long way coming.

The big bad woolfWoolf, that is wonderful news.  I didn't realize that some voc rehab places had campuses and dorms.  That is so cool!  I am proud of you for continuing to support your son and help him get help.  This is a wonderful opportunity.  I don't think he'd have that opportunity where I live.  You'll have to keep us updated throughout the 35 weeks and then post grad.  Congratulations to to you and especially him!!!!

Isn't THAT great news!!!!!

Sending you & Robert best wishes for success in this endeavor!!!!!

Take good care!

Woolf,

What area of MD are you in?  We are looking into Delaware and this may be some great info to keep under my hat.  My son is not quite old enough for the program you mentioned (it sounds like an adult program), but he is 12 and the years between now and then are short as I am sure you know!

Mary

Great news!  Congratulations and best of luck to Robert.
